Puyallup Artists :: Puyallup Valley Dental :: Dr. Urback/Dr. Hall

Check out what a local dental office is promoting! The office of Dr. Urback and Dr. Hall is presenting artists around the Puyallup area. Here is what they have to say!

Our community has many talented artists, some with limited opportunity to showcase their work. Puyallup Valley Dental Care is striving to provide publicity for them, and we now have another fantastic opportunity to do just that. Following our one day show at “Arts in the Park” in August, we now present an expanded display at Puyallup’s Premier Gallery in the Activity Center by artists associated with our practice. Please visit the gallery between now and February 11, 2011, to see the incredible talent from our community – some are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Valley Arts United.  A reception will be held the evening of Friday, December 3rd from 6-8 p.m. to introduce the exhibit.  Refreshments will be served.  Visit http://www.puyallupvalleydental.com/ to see what else we are doing!

Importance of Brushing Your Teeth :: Smiles By Sutherland :: Puyallup,Orthodontist

The ADA (American Dental Association) says it is crucial you brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. You can even find the stamp of approval on toothpaste that has the ADA Seal of Acceptance! If you do this, it will enhance your overall health. It has been found that if you do not brush your teeth every day, it can lead to other more serious health problems. When you are brushing your teeth, squeeze a pea size amount of toothpaste onto your toothbrush and move in circular motions on your teeth; brush the top, bottom, inside and outside of your teeth. Don’t forget to brush your tongue; that is where bacteria can build up. Remember to spit out your toothpaste and rinse your mouth when you are done brushing. Please floss after brushing; this will help keep your gums clean and fresh too.

Here is a great tool to have, if you are having lunch and are unable to brush after you eat. Carry a bottle of water to rinse excess food and/or eat an apple. Apples are a natural tooth cleaner; eat the apple and rinse with water. This will help until you can brush your teeth later.

Do not forget to brush your teeth twice a day. Brushing your teeth is important for your entire body and this is a good way to help yourself.

October 2010 :: iTouch Winner :: Smiles by Sutherland :: Puyallup,Orthodontist

Once again, the patients and families that come to Dr. Sutherland's office have gone on the world wide web and have rated our office on five different sites, which can be found off our main website www.smilesbysutherland.com.  Everyone who rated the office was told to send Jeanne an email with their name and how many sites they visited. Those who did this, got their name put into the iTouch drawing this year. Last year we pulled a mom's name out of a bowl and she won the iPod, this year the winner is a patient that is new to our office. Her mom kept it a surprise when she brought her to our office. When she found out she couldn't even believe it, she had to ask twice about what she had won!  She was kind enough to let us photograph her with the iTouch along with Jeanne who is our Patient Care Coordinator! The winner is Alisha Hilt! Thank you Alisha for rating our office!

Look for the latest technology that you can win from Apple in Dr. Sutherland's office next year!

Ask the Professional :: Newspaper Article :: August :: Smiles By Sutherland

Why do patients choose Dr. Sutherland’s office for their orthodontic treatment?

According to many current and past patients, they did not choose Dr. Sutherland’s office because the office went “Green” with digital x-rays, digital charting and scheduling. Nor did they choose his office because he uses the latest technology like Teen Invisalign™, Invisalign® or the Damon System. Dr. Sutherland’s patients chose his office because of his integrity, great treatment results and because they are greeted with a smile, feel welcome and part of a family. If you want orthodontic treatment in a warm, friendly environment where you are a part of something special then Dr. Sutherland’s office is the place for you. For more information about Dr. Sutherland and his office, visit our website at www.smilesbysutherland.com or call our office at 253.848.4537 to schedule a complimentary consultation. Patient of the Month :: Sabrina's Story :: Smiles By Sutherland

I moved to Washington about four and half years ago and I remember being emotionally worn out. My youngest child had just completed three years of chemotherapy for Leukemia. It felt like the whole family became sick. I was hoping to be stationed close to family in Indiana and ended up being 2000 miles and two time zones away. This was not what I had in mind.

My mom found out she had stage four breast cancer and, after a two year battle, she passed away in March 2009. During that time we also lost my grandpa and my mom’s sister. I was feeling very sad and weary.

In the midst of all of this, I won your drawing. I had never won anything of value. I completely felt that God saw me and worked through your office to give me a special gift to remind me that He hadn’t forgotten about me.

Every time I came for an appointment I was reminded of how much God loves me!

Thank you so much for being a God fearing, Spirit filled office. Thank you for listening and being obedient to our Lord. 1 John 3:1 “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God.”

Thank you for making me feel welcomed each visit, for being so warm and friendly.

The Retainer question: Puyallup Orthodontist

Q. I’ve had my braces off for three years now. Do I really still have to wear my retainers?

A.  Absolutely. After your braces are removed, your teeth will shift if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold your teeth in their corrected, ideal positions. Wearing retainers is the best insurance that your orthodontic treatment will last for a lifetime. For more information, visit us on the web at smilesbysutherland.com, or call our downtown Puyallup office at 253.848.4537 for a complimentary consultation.

Wisdom Teeth: Puyallup Wa Orthodontist

Q.  My daughter is a senior in high school, and has had her wisdom teeth for two years.  Most of her friends have had theirs removed; should she get them out before she goes to college?

A.  In most cases, it is best to have wisdom teeth removed in the mid-to-late teen years.  One of the best reasons to have wisdom teeth removed is that they are difficult to clean properly, and are therefore prime candidates for cavities. Also, they can cause crowding, and interfere with orthodontic work that is in progress or has been completed.  If you have questions or concerns, the best thing to do is schedule a consultation with your orthodontist or family dentist.  If you would like more information about our orthodontic practice, please visit us on the web at smilesbysutherland.com, or call our office at 253.848.4537 for a complimentary consultation.

The difference between Invisalign & Braces: Puyallup Orthodontist

Q.  I saw an Invisalign ad on TV.  Can someone explain the difference between Invisalign and braces?
A.  Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that fit over your teeth and incrementally move your teeth into the desired straight position. The aligners are replaced about every two weeks and are worn about 22 hours a day. They are removed to eat and drink but can be worn while drinking water. Invisalign is most effective at treating minor to moderate tooth crowding or spacing issues.  Traditional braces utilize either metal or ceramic brackets to move teeth into the desired position. In some cases traditional braces can move teeth BETTER and are often recommended for more complex orthodontic cases.  If you are interested in Invisalign, please call our office for a complimentary consultation at 253.848.4537, or visit us on the web at www.smilesbysutherland.com.

What foods to eat with Braces?: Puyallup Orthodontist

Q.  Are there any foods I can’t eat when I have braces?
A.  When you have braces, it is important to stay away from hard, sticky, gooey or crunchy foods. Foods like caramel, taffy and  peanut brittle can stick to your braces and pull them off your teeth. You also need to be careful with crunchy foods like carrots and apples and hard rolls so you do not knock off your braces.  In some cases, you may just need to alter how you prepare the food.  For example, instead of biting in to a whole apple, cut the apple into slices. You can do the same with crusty bread.  Be aware that you have brackets glued to your teeth, and any extreme force against the brackets can pop them off.  For more information, or a complimentary consultation, call our office at 253.848.4537, or visit us on the web at smilesbysutherland.com.

Chewing gum with Braces?: Puyallup, WA Orthodontist

Q.  Can I still chew gum with braces?

A.  Chewing SUGAR FREE gum while you have braces is fine for most braces these days.  In days past, the gum used to  get caught on the braces and pull them off. Now we have stronger glues and smaller braces. However, gum with sugar can cause other problems.   Sugar will cause  the plaque on the teeth to grow more quickly which leads to higher probability of tooth decay.   In most cases a sugar free, non-stick gum such as Freedent or Wrigley's Extra will be fine. If you have braces, it is best to consult your orthodontist before chewing gum.   For more information, or for a complimentary consultation, call our office at 253.848.4537, or visit us on the web at smilesbysutherland.com.

Recipient Tim Hurd

1. What have you been up to since 09 when you got your scholarship?

During the summer after I got my scholarship I traveled to work at an orphanage in Nairobi Kenya for July, and relaxed over summer having the first summer break with no homework of my life.
2. Where are you going to school & what are you studying?

I'm going to school at PLU and studying Physics/Engineering.

3. Do you have ideas about what you want to do after school?

I don't really know exactly what I'm planning on doing because so many different career paths sound like fun to me that I am going to have a very hard time choosing when the time comes. I cant even choose what kind of engineering I want to major in yet let alone what kind of job I want after I get it. I guess in general I'd say i want to have a job that is working to improve peoples lives but specifically I don't know exactly which path to take to accomplish that.

4. What are some things you enjoy doing in your spare time?

play ultimate frisbee on the PLU "Reign" team, skiing anywhere I can as much as possible, playing video games with friends, volunteering with a group of friends to help out and have fun with each other, organizing fun events that get people active in the PLU community, and going to see my family back at home every now and then.

5. How has having braces changed you?

It has definitely given me more confidence and also lets me smile with my teeth showing a lot more.

Q: Is it Common for adults to get orthodontic treatment?: Puyallup Orthodontist, Dr Sutherland

Q.  Is it common for adults to get orthodontic treatment?

A.    Yes!  In fact, a quarter or more of our orthodontic patients  are adults and  more  than half of those are women.  Many adults who were unable to receive orthodontic treatment as children are now finding that braces are easier than ever to wear. Many adult patients are finding that with our flexible financing, orthodontic treatment can be very affordable .  Also, braces today tend to be more comfortable, smaller and less visible than they used to be. In fact, some conditions may be treated with the Invisalign System.  If you have always wanted to have a great smile, ask your orthodontist what options are available for you.  Visit us on the web at www.smilesbysutherland.com, or call our office at 253.848-4537 for a complimentary consultation
